OBITUARY.

BISHOP OF NEWCASTLE. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, July 9. The death is announced of the Rt. Hon. Dr Long, Bishop of Newcastle. He became ill last night after the Lambeth Conference and died in hospital from cerebal haemorrhage. Dr Long was one of the foremost men in Australian Church life. The Rt. Rev. George Merrick Long, D.D., LL.D., C.8.E., was bom at Carisbrook, Victoria, on November 5, 1875. He had a distinguished scholastic career at Melbourne University. He was ordained in 1899. He was the head master of Trinity Grammar School from 1904 to 1911. He was elected Bishop of Bathurst in succession to the date Dr Camidge. He was created C.B.E. in 1919. During the war from 1918 to 1919 Dr Long was Director of Education with the A.I.F. in England, and was given the rank of Brigadier-General. He became Bishop of Bathurst in 1928. JOHN McCARROL. He came to the Dominion from Belfast 44 years ago. He is survived by seven sons and two daughters. He had been residing here with a son for a year. CAPTAIN WELCH. The death is announced of Captain Christopher Welch, the oldest master mariner of New Zealand, who celebrated his hundredth birthday in November last.
