DAIRY BOARD.

CHAIRMAN RE-ELECTED. GRADING OP CHEESE. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON. July 9. Mr W.. A. loms, chairman of the Dairy Board, at present in England, was re-elected chairman at a meeting to-day. The Dairy Board to-day gave consideration at length to the question of the quality of cheese, in connection with which complaints have been made that the general grade of exports in the season just concluded showed a serious decline over that of previous years. Mr W. M. Singleton, Director of the Dairy Division, was present by request. A resolution passed at the Hamilton Conference had been referred to the Dairy Board. The secretary reported that an analvsis of the vote cast at the National Dairy Conference showed that factories representing 34.935 tons of cheese had voted in favour of the resolution, and factories representing 13.013 tons against it. Correspondence was received from the South Island Dairy Association indicating that if the resolution was to be made applicable, and the premium system established, it considered it should be made on the national basis, and not on the basis of pools for separate grading ports. After very lengthy and detailed discussion. the following resolution was carried:— “That, as the Board does not possess sufficient power to carry into effect the recommendations of the Hamilton Conference, it is prepared to assist heartily in promoting a voluntary scheme in any particular district, which may have the effect of improving cheese quality, and the Board's officers would be available to undertake work in this connection.” It is understood that efforts will be made forthwith in Taranaki for an agreement to be reached on the voluntary basis to apply the scheme. Under the scheme, all cheese would be levied a definite sum per crate, and the sum so received divided in accordance with the grade accorded the cheese, thus ensuring managers to aim at high quality.
