A meeting of the committee of the Temuka District High School was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs A. E. Smith (chairman). L. G. Franklin, R. Longson, A. R. Beck, M. Swap. A. W. Buzan, and E. B. Cooper (secretary). Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster (Mr W. L. Harrison) reported that the roll number of the primary department was" 390, but owing to sickness the attendance had been poor. The secondary roll was 81. with an average attendance of 76. Thanks to the generosity of Mr W. F. Evans, the cocoa club was still proving a boon to the children, between 40 and 60 children partaking of cocoa, free of charge, each day. Thanks were due to Mr L. G. Scrimshaw and Mr M. Swap for providing an honour’s board and bringing it up-to-date. The primary board, also, was now T up-to-date. A consignment of books had come to hand for the library, and it was hoped to catalogue these immediately. Thanks were due to Mrs Kingston for her gift of a parcel of magazines. Miss D. Methven had resigned from the Watt-Lowry school, and Miss Andrew had started in her place. An extra assistant (Miss Halpin) had been appointed temporarily in the infant room. Miss Manson would leave on July 25 to go to Canada on exchange. The primary football team was leading in its competition, having defeated Timaru South, Main, West and Marist Brothers. About 70 pupils journeyed to Timaru to see the British match, and the school were indebted to Messrs Abbot, Noonan, and A. E. Smith for conveying the boys to Timaru to play their games. * Votes of thanks were passed to those gentlemen, and Miss Kingston, whose names appeared in the report, for assistance given. The report was adopted. Correspondence. Mr E. H. Marriner, organiser for the Canterbury Winter Show, forwarded particulars of railway excursions in connection with the Show. In answer to the chairman, Mr Harrison said that the school did not make the journey last year. Mr Longson moved that an endeavour be made to make up a party, joining with the Timaru schools. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman, secretary, Mr Beck and the headmaster.

A circular was received from the Canterbury Education Board, in i regard to the Cancer Campaign Fund, ! asking for assistance, through the schools. The first annual meeting of the Temuka Girl Guides’ Association was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs Andrew Guild presiding over an attendance of 30 ladies. Annual Report. The annual report expressed pleasure that the efforts of the Committee in establishing a Girl Guides’ Association in Temuka had been successful, and thanks were due to the Timaru helpers for their assistance. On September 20th. the first twelve Guides were enrolled by Mrs F. F. A. Ulrich, Commissioner for South Canterbury, and the membership had increased to 21. Under the capable leadership of Mrs Richards and Miss M. Topham. who, during the year had attained captain’s and lieutenant's warrants respectively, the work had shown steady progress, and the Association expressed appreciation of Mrs Richards’ energy and devotion to the Guide movement. During November a Brownie Pack was formed with Miss Winnie Sinclair as Acting Brown Owl. This Pack now had 26 members. Miss Sinclair resigned her position owing to her departure from the district, and Miss Edith Smith was appointed to the vacancy. Mrs Allington resigned the position of secretary owing to her leaving the district, and Mrs Watson | was appointed in her stead. The Committee were glad to take the opportunity of making a small presentation to Mrs Allington. The report also expressed appreciation of the action of the management of the Presbyterian Church in granting the use of the Sunday School, for meetings, and for the training of tne Guides. Miss McAteer kindly gave the Guides a course of instruction in first aid, and thanks were due to her for the valuable assistance rendered. All the Guides had now received second class badges. The Committee expressed appreciation of the social evenings at which they were entertained by the Guides during the past year. In conclusion the report thanked all who had assisted in furthering the interests of the movement. The balance sheet showed a credit of £3/2/-, and with the annual report, was unanimously adopted, without discussion. Election of Officers. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs A. Thanks were expresesd to the Prebyterian Church management for the use of a room for meetings during the year, and a grant of £1 was voted to cover the cost of lighting, etc. New associates elected were—Mesdames W. F. Evans, A. W. Buzan, A. C. Stephens, Mclnnes, Topham, Hayhurst. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr F. A. Joynt for auditing the books and drawing up a balance sheet. Several questions were answered, and it was stated that the Brownie Pack, under Miss Smith, was growing large. A vote of thanks was passed to the Borough Council for use of the room for meetings. W.C.T.U. The monthly meeting of the Temuka Women's Christian Temperance Union, held in the Methodist schoolroom, took the form of a social afternoon, and there was a good attendance of members and friends. The president, Mrs Blakemore, occupied the chair. Devotions were taken by the president and Mrs Douglas, who made special mention of sick and absent members. A silent vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs H. Hewson and Mrs J. Douglas in their bereavements. It was decided to accept Mrs Gibb’s offer to hold the next meeting at her home. Afternoon tea was dispensed, and musical and elocutionary items were contributed by the following ladies: — Miss Doreen Philp (piano solo), Mrs Harrison (songs), Mrs Douglas (recitation), Miss Radford (song), Miss Comer (piano solo), Mrs Cameron (song). Miss Brian (song). Mrs Blakemore proposed a vote of thanks to all those who had helped to make the meeting so enjoyable, and the motion was carried by acclamation. !
