WAIMATE.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Waimate School Committee was held on Monday. Present —Mr W. F. George (in the chair), and Messrs J. Page, H. Allington, E. R. Templeton, W. Hettrick, W. Anderson, H. Joliff, D. Newall and the secretary (Mr W. G. Paul). The chairman welcomed the new headmaster, Mr D. Brown, and trusted he would remain in Waimate for a long time. Mr Brown thanked the chairman and members for their kindly welcome. 1-Ie said that although he was following in the steps of several illustrious teachers, he would try to make the school a better one. The secretary of the Canterbury Education Board wrote confirming the appointment of Mr D. Brown as headmaster; also a list of ward representatives who will retire by effluxion of time on 13th August. The Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education, wrote in reply re purchase of additional land for agricultural purposes. They had already five acres, and if he made an exception in the case of Waimate, he would receive j applications from other schools, which he would find difficult to refuse, and he could not see his way to grant this requests If contributions amounting to £l2O were provided, a subsidy of a similar amount would be granted.— Received. The secretary of the Education Board wrote in reply to the Committee’s letter regarding increasing the period that teachers should remain in a position, and regretted that under the present law it was not possible to insist on a teacher remaining longer than eleven months. The Board agreed with the Committee’s contention, and had placed a remit before the last conference of Education Boards, but was unsuccessful. Mr Bitchener, M.P., wrote stating that he had put the Committee’s request for additional land for the purpose of school gardens, and had urged ! the reasonableness of it and asked for favourable consideration. He forwarded the Minister’s reply. It was unanimously decided to ask the Borough Council to hold over the Committee’s option on .the land desired, and to write to the Minister of Education through the member for the district, suggesting that he obtain a report on the state of affairs. A circular letter was received from the Canterbury School Committees’ Association, stating that a special Committee was set up to consider giving assistance through the schools to the cancer campaign, and suggested that £IOOO be raised by the children. Waimate School quota would be £ls. It was decided to advise that an adequate local effort was being made. The secretary of the Hunter School Committee wrote advising that at a meeting of householders a motion was passed expressing appreciation of the work carried out by the Waimate dental clinic.

Mr E. H. Marriner, organiser for the Canterbury Winter Show, forwarded particulars of railway excursions in

connection with the show, and extend|ed an invitation to teachers and scholars from 18th to 23rd. I The headmaster (Mr D. Brown) reported that the attendance on the roll numbered 570—boys 250. girls 290. The : average attendance was—boys 249, girls 262, total 511. Percentage of attendance 90. The health of the pupils I was very fair, but influenza had kept j down the attendance, especially in the j senior classes. The heating seemed to be adequate in all rooms. Mr Melton had been granted two months’ sick leave, and Miss Gunn took up relief duty on July 2nd. The headmaster j entered upon his duties on July 2nd. • The visiting committee, Messrs Ander--1 son and Allington, visited the school on Monday, and sanctioned the purchase of a supply of stationery which was required. The headmaster thanked the chairman (Mr George) for the courtesy of his welcome and a visit to the school. Mr Allington brought up the matter of home-work, which he considered excessive. The headmaster said he would draw up a report for presentation at the next meeting. Messrs George and Hettrick were appointed visitors for the month. Accounts amounting to £6/7/2 were passed for payment. FOOTBALL. The weekly meeting of the Waimate Sub-Union was held on Monday. Present—Mr A. Sawell (in the chair), Messrs Winning, Kilworth, Kelly, Webster, Johnston, Williams, and the secretary (Mr I. Catto). Correspondence. The Douglas School made application for a new/ football.—The usual grant of 10/- was made. The Rev. W. F. NichoJ, on behalf of the Waimate Ministers’ Association, wrote regretting that permission had been given for a match on Sunday between the Waimate carriers and railway staffs of Waimate and Studholme, and thought that their action would alienate a lot of public support. The Rev. W. B. Scott, sole selector, also wrote pointing out the difficult position he was placed in by their action, and said that in the event of the permission not being withdrawn, he could not do other than lay down his office as selector. The chairman, Mr Sawell, said he had opposed the application when it was first brought up. and in view of the letters of protest, the moved that the resolution be rescinded.—Mr Winning seconded this. Mr Kilworth said he had come into contact with business people, and there was very little opposition there, and he was in favour of the game being played. Mr Webster also spoke in favour of the match being played. Mr Williams said he could not see why footballers who could not get off. except on Sundays, should be debarred from playing, especially when other sports were played on that day and no protest made.

Mr Johnson said he must support the Sub-Union’s permission, and in his opinion more support would be derived from those going to play than from those protesting. The motion was lost, only the proposer and seconder voting for it. The Nukuroa Mutual Improvement Society, representing 32 Willowbridje and Nukuroa members, also forwarded a letter of protest against Sunday play. An application for the use of Manchester Park for a match between ...iigh School and St. Kevin’s on Saturday was granted. J. Goodwin, a Huimai player, was placed on the caution list. Messrs Johnson and Dench undertook to attend to repairs to the grandstand, etc. Thursday’s Matches. Representative match, on Manchester Park, Mackenzie v. Waimate, at 3 p.m. Curtain-raiser—Huimai v. Old Boys (junior), at 1.30 p.m. *

PERSONAL Mr L. J. Collins, Waimate County Clerk, returned from Wellington during the week-end, where he had been attending the counties’ and county clerks’ conference. The flag at the local Post Office was flown at half-mast yesterday out c? respect to the late Sir Joseph Ward. NOTES. A meeting of the A. and P. Association was held on Saturday, Mr A. W. Barnett presiding over a fair attendance of members. The recommendations of various sub-committees for the show schedules were adopted, and judges selected for various sections. It was resolved the the president and secretary arrange for a meeting of the Grounds Committee at the show grounds on some suitable date prior to the next meeting of the General Committee. At the School Committee meeting on Monday, the matter of renewing the instruments of the School Band was discussed, and it was decided to purchase five new bugles and two kettledrums. 500 acres rich river flats, attractive homestead, sheering shed, yards, dip, sheep, cattle, herses, implements, chaff, hay.
