APPROACH OF SPRING. That spring is approaching is evidenced by the peeping shoots of bulbs and the opening buds on deciduous trees in the neighbourhood of Geraldine. Other evidence is the birth of early lambs. Some days back, one appeared on the farm of Mr McGregor, Orari Road, and two others are reported on a farm in Raukapuka.

FOG CAUSES ACCIDENT. Many motorists returning from Christchurch over the week-end had an anxious time in the fog that hung around the Geraldine district. Eight hundred and seventy-four books had been issued during the month. Five new subscribers had joined, making a total of 99, including three juveniles. Councillor Logan reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made with the School to allow the School the use of classical books. The report was adopted. Correspondence. Mrs Bennett wrote asking for another light on Forest Road. —Left to Works Committee. Collection of Curios. Miss E. Stubbs, Christchurch, advised that her mother and family were not in favour of the requests of the schools to have the collection of curios presented by her late father to the Borough, and felt sure that her father would not have given his consent. It would be quite impossible to move so many small things about, and ■ to keep the collection intact. She had , read in the Christchurch papers that j the Library Committee of the Council apparently considered the collection j not wanted, and had decided to dispose of it to anyone who would take j it. In those circumstances, if the Council were agreeable, they would be j pleased to have the collection re- j turned.—lt was decided that the! matter be held over till the next i meeting. Town Hall Report. The manager of the Town Hall (Mr j C. C. Knight) reported that eight performances had been shown during June, and there had been five lettings of the hall. The past month had been very poor, due to bad weather and big i counter attractions. He desired per- j mission to commence negotiations re- j garding the purchase of new seating, 1 as provided for in the estimates. He also desired to remind the Council regarding the matter of conveniences in the hall. It was decided to instal a special auto-flush convenience on trial, and permission was granted the manager to arrange for seating. Excessive Use of Water. Councillor Miller drew attention to 1 the fact that an excessive quantity of water was used by residents in Ger- j aldine. Sixty thousand gallons a day were pumped—that was sixty gallons a head—as compared with the regula- i tion quantity of thirty gallons per head in the cities.

It was remarked that more water was used in the winter than in the summer, and the suggestion was advanced that this was caused by people allowing their taps to run to prevent freezing. The Mayor said that if the matter was given publicity, it might have the effect of making the people conserve their supply. If not, investigations would have to be made. Overseer’s Report. The Overseer (Mr B. Hayes) reported that the Council staff had attended to the various services during the month. The Works Committee had sanctioned the grubbing of blackberry on Macdonald Street, and this work had Ipeen carried out in a thorough manner. The unsightly growth on the face of the clay bank had been stripped and carted away, and the drain cleaned, making a decided improvement in the appearance of the locality. The entrance to the bush had been cleaned, and the trees on the path were being cleared. Improvements had taken place on Totara Street, and the Serpentine Creek had been cleaned. The gorse hedge near the Park gates had been removed. Councillor Miller drew attention to the need of channelling in Macdonald Street, and stated that they should prepare to call tenders for this work, which was badly in need of doing. Councillor Bell said that they would have to keep in mind the extension of the water main in Talbot Street South, and the fact that the channelling below Pleasant Valley Road would need replacing shortly. It was decided to make inquiries for piping for the extension of the mains, and that the Council should inspect the proposed work in Macdonald Street and Talbot Street South, on Monday morning next.
