COMPENSATION CLAIM FAILS. By Telegraph—Pises* Association. AUCKLAND, July 7. Judgment in a claim for damages arising out of an accident at the works of the Challenge Phosphate Company at Otahuhu on February 25th, 1929, was given by Mr Justice Smith in the Supreme Court. Plaintiff, John Knilock Simpson, claimed £2OOO damages from the Challenge Company, in respect of injuries he received when the top portion of a “den” at the works fell upon him. Judgment was given for defendant company. His Honour said that if there were negligence on the Company’s part plaintiff’s own contributing negligence was the real cause of his injuries.
CHINESE GAMBLING HOUSE. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND. July 7. Ten detectives last evening raided a Chinese restaurant in Grey Avenue and arrested' a laundryman, Ah Soon, for keeping a common gaming house and 40 other Chinese for being illegally on premises. The police van made three trips to the station with the arrested men, where they were bailed out. They reappeared at the Police, Court this morning. Ah Soon was fined £75, and forty others £2 each.
