CHRISTCHURCH NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) IN AND ABOUT THE CITY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 7. British Team to Play Maoris. The British team to meet New Zealand Maoris at Wellington on Wednesday is as follows: Full-back: J. Bassett. Three-quarters: A. L. Novis, T. E. Jones-Davies, C. D. Aarvold, J. C. Morley. Fly-half: H. M. Bowcott. Scrum-half: R. S. Spong. Forwards: Ivor Jones, G.R. Beamish, F. D. Prentice, B. H. Black, J. L. Farrell, D. A. Kendrew, D. Parker, H. O’H. O'Neill. Personal. Canon Wilford, principal of College House, suffered a broken elbow through a fall on Friday, and is still in St. George’s Hospital. The Rev. H. W. Williams, chaplain of the hospital, and Canon son, the Rev. J. R. Wilford, are carrying on the usual lectures .and services at College House. Cheap Meat. There has been no change in the prices of beef and mutton, and quotations this week remain at the same level as they have for a number of months past. The housewife cannot expect to enjoy the present extremely reasonable retail prices indefinitely. Both beef and mutton are now cheaper than they have been for a number of years, and are very much more reasonable in Christchurch than- they are in other centres. Quotations are as follows:—Mutton: Flaps 2d a lb, forequarters 3d, shoulders 4*d, legs 6d, chops from 3d. Lamb: Large forequarters 7*d, medium from B£d, large sides 9£d, large hindquarters lOd. Beef: Skirt steak 6d, beefsteak 6d, sirloin BJd, ribs gravy beef sd, flanks 4d. brisket sd. Rugby Tactic*. Writing in to-night’s “Star,” W.G.G., one of the most experienced Rugby journalists and administrators in the Dominion, takes the British team to task for illegal play. After paying high tribute to the brilliant work of the visitors, W.G.G. writes:— “A bad feature in the game was the illegal tackling of the visitors’ forwards. At Dunedin actual tackling of opponents going for the ball was not ; very noticeable, more holding being ! indulged in. In the last game several New Zealanders, when some distance from the ball, were put out of action by illegal tackling. Mr Hollander controlled the game in good style. He had a hard afternoon’s work and came through with great credit. He made no serious mistake all the game. Had he caught the Englishmen more frequently for illegal tackling and penalised both sides early in the game for holding the ball too long, his work would have been perfect.” Trout Hatching. The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society has had an excellent season for ova stripping, and at the present time there are more eggs in the hatcheries than has ever before been the case. They number about 2.300.000, and all the troughs in the hatcheries are full. Large orders have been received from other Societies this , year, and big quantities of ova are being packed and sent away. Big Day for Railways. It is estimated that nearly 7000 people from various parts of the South Island arrived at the Christchurch Station on Saturday morning, and returned in the evening to connect with return trains. Fourteen of the big AB type locomotives were used on the specials, in addition to those engaged on the ordinary time-table runs, which had to be worked as usual. Six of the engines were required to work the three trains from the south—one from Invercargill and tjie other two from Dunedin. Another two were required for the special from Timaru, making eight in use on the main south line. The remaining six were used on the West Coast specials. The six that took the passenger trains to Arthur’s Pass were brought back on Saturday night, three double-headed goods trains, each with a load of 450 tons, leaving the Pass one after the other, the first pulling out just after midnight.
