AUCKLAND EMPLOYEES PROTEST. / , By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 7. A statement that 84 men were under notice of dismissal, with the likelihood of more, was made at a meeting of the Auckland branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants yesterday afternoon. The meeting was held to discuss retrenchment of Railway Department employees, and there was an attendance of about 250 members. A decision was made to forward to the Executive Council of the Society a resolution seeking the prevention of any further dismissal of men until the Royal Commission now sitting at Wellington had reached a decision, and placed it before the Minister of Railways, Other resolutions passed in committee will be forwarded to the Executive Council of the Society, Which will meet at Wellington on July 14th to consider matters forwarded from various branches to be placed before the Commission MORE MEN RECEIVE NOTICE CASUALS AT ADDINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, July 7. Notice of termination of their employment was given to thirty employees at Addington railway workshops this evening, the men affected being casuals who had been in the employ of the department for varying lengths of time. The workshops manager states that no permanent men have been put off. All those given notice are casual employees, some of them emergency casuals, who had been engaged in work from day to day, and the others term casuals, of whom many had been employed for some time. There were some returned soldiers among those dismissed. Forty-five men were dismissed from the workshops a fortnight ago. City Council Protest. The Christchurch City Council, tonight carried the following resolution: “That this Council emphatically protests against the action of the Government in increasing unemployment by dismissing men from the railway workshops and other departments without making provisions for their employment in other directions."
