PENCARROW LIGHTS

IMPROVEMENTS AFFECTED. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 7. An improvement to what is known as the low level light at Pencarrow Head is now being carried out by the Wellington Harbour Board. The present light which was put in position over 20 years ago, after the wreck of the steamer Devon, is to be replaced by a steel tower, which will lift the light 32 feet above high water mark. This light will be of the Aga type, which is on order from the makers in Sweden, and will be installed immediately after arrival. The high level light at Pencarrow head, which was the first regular light installed on the New Zealand coast, has done duty for many years, and will in the near future be replaced by a modern lighthouse, to be erected on Baring Head, a few miles to the southeast.
