OPEN OF CONFERENCE TO-DAY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 30. The proprietors and editors of all the most important newspapers of the Empire are now assembled in London for the Imperial Press Conference, There has not been a gathering of this character for nearly twenty years. The delegates will be entertained at a luncheon of welcome next Tuesday in Westminster Hall.
Additional interest will be given to the occasion by the fact that it is the first luncheon to be given in Westminster Hall since the King’s coronation, when representatives of the Dominion Parliaments, who attended the coronation, were similarly entertained. The Speaker of the House of Commons will preside, and the Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and leaders of other political parties will welcome the delegates. CHEAPER CABLES DESIRED. APPEAL TO IMPERIAL PRESS CONFERENCE (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received June 1, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 1. The half-yearly meeting of the Australian Newspapers' Conference decided to communicate with the Imperial Press Conference, emphasising the need for an immediate reduction of all cable rates, to at least a parity with the beam charges.
