Rising Against the Reds
ASSUMING LARGE PROPORTIONS. (United Press Association—By TOectrle Telegraph—Copyright.) SHANGHAI, May 30. A radio message from Harbin states that an uprising against the Reds in Vladivostok is assuming large proportions. Over half of the city is in the hands of the insurgents. Prisoners numbering 5000 who have been freed from gaol are supporting the insurgents, while Red officials are fleeing.
(Vladivostok is the chief city in Asiatic Russia and has a good harboUr which is ice-bound for three months of the year. Its population, including some thousands of Chinese, is in the region of 40,000. One of the, branches of the Trans-Siberian railway has its terminus there. The Soviet grip on Siberia has never been so strong as farther west, as many of the White Russians, who were driven out by the Revolution, went to the East and settled in China, subsequently finding their way back to cities like Vladivostok.)
ATTACK BY PIRATES. LAWLESSNESS ON SHANGHAI WATERFRONT. (United Press Association—By TBiectris Telegraph—Copyright.) SHANGHAI, May 30. In consequence of a murderous pirate attack on the Shanghai waterfront, John Harder and James Irvine were critically wounded (the former dying hours later); a Chinese clerk was killed and two others were dangerously wounded. Harder and Irvine were foreign members of the Whangpoo Conservancy Board and were engaged in issuing wages from a small launch, when another launch, containing seven armed men, steamed alongside. The pirates opened fire and escaped with 27,000 dollars. Two British soldiers volunteered for blood transfusion in the hor»« of saving the victims.
