STERNER POLICY IN INDIA.
Checking Lawlessness.
new ordinances issued. (United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received June 1, 5.5 p..m) DELHI, May 31. The Government of India has inaugurated more drastic remedies to meet the political situation in the country by the promulgation by Viscount Irwin, of two new ordinances to protect shopkeepers from picketing, to stop the movement for the non-payment ol taxes, and to deal with attempts to tamper with the loyalty of soldiers, police and Government servants. These measures have been long contemplated, but they have been delayed in order to give Congressmen an opportunity to cease their activities.
The ordinances will apply immediately to the Bombay Presidency, but may extend to an3 r part of the country as needed. It is likely that if these measures are not successful, the Government will declare the congress an unlawful body.
