WORLD’S SCULLING TITLE.

PHELPS DEFEATS BARRY. (United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received June 1, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 31. For the world’s sculling championship, Ted Phelps (challenger) easily defeated Barry (holder), by a distance. There was intense interest in what proved to be a one-sided contest, and the crowds lined both sides of the Thames.

Ted Phelps, who helped to train Pearce for the Olympic Games, won the championship in 28min ssec. He was leading nearly all the way. He is a son of the well-known sculler, Bossy Phelps. There was a following wind, and a smooth river. Barry showed signs of distress at Devonshire Meadow, the accompanying launches slackening speed in order to keep behind him. Phelps was fifteen lengths ahead at Chiswick Steps, twenty at Barnes Bridge. He finished twenty-three lengths ahead.
