A light aeroplane crashed from a height of 500 ft at Tamworth, and the pilot Frank Mitchell, aged 35 years, and Harry West, flying student, were killed instantly. Mitchell was one of the best known aviators in Sydney. He was chief mechanic of the Aero Club. He was conducting a flying school for students at Tamworth, and had completed some aerobatics, when the sightseers were horror-stricken to see the propellor become detached and whizz through space. It landed on a housetop. The machine went into a tail spin, then nose dived into the main street, where it was smashed to pieces. The occupants were dreadfully injured.
