GERALDINE.

FOOTBALL REBULT Quite a number gathered at the Geraldine Domain on Saturday afternoon to witness the third grade match between Geraldine and Star, two of the three leading teams in the competition. The game, which was fast, and marked by numerous exciting movements, was undoubtedly the best seen in Geraldine this season from a specator’s point of view, and resulted in a last minute victory for the home team by six.points to three. From the start of the match, the Red r Blacks made successive raids into the Star’s twenty-five, and the “up-and-under” methods adopted by both teams was pretty to watch. Geraldine were the first to draw blood, W. Small scoring. For the remainder of the first half the visiting team had the better of the game. The second half was most evenly contested, and Star opened their account with a penalty kick. From then on the Geraldine team made determined efforts to gain points for victory, and came close to scoring on several occasions. Star’s indomitable defence and penalty kicks relieving the position for the visiting team. Star broke away on two or three occasions, and more than once looked like reaching a scoring position. However, for the most part, Gerrjdine had the best of the game, and following a pretty back rush, Lance Wood went over at the corner to score on time. Geraldine 6, Star 3. Sparkling Rugby was witnessed from start to finish, and although it seems invidious to bestow special praise on individual players, Bethune, Lance Wood, Smith, and Small were certainly outstanding. The Geraldine fourths met with defeat by 15 to 12 at the hands of Pareora. At half-time, the Geraldine team was leading by 12 to 3. For the local team P. Hewson, H. Hill and G. Cain scored tries, the latter being a pretty one. Ashby added three points from a penalty kick. The fifth grade fifteen defeated Zingari by fifteen points to three, Brenton, Davies and Womer scoring, and Stringer and Callanan adding the additional points. A beautiful kick at goal from nearly half-way, on the part of Davies, narrowly missed returning results. The Waihi thirds were defeated by High School fourteen to &ix in « hard fought match. ADVERTISING BRINGS RESULTS. The "Herald ’ advertising brings results has been amply demonstrated during the past six months. Every one of a dozen lost advertisements handled by the resident representative during that period has resulted in the lost article being restored to its legitimate owner. Last week, an advertisement for a cycle, which had either been stolen or “borrowed.” resulted in the owner regaining his property, the machine having been abandoned nearly a mile away from where it was taken. Incidentally, the same advertisement was responsible for the return of a second cycle that had been taken. “For sale” notices have been almost equally successful.
