ABSCONDED FROM BAIL.

ACCUSED FAILS TO APPEAR. WARRANT FOR ARREST ISSUED. At a sitting of the Supreme Court in Timaru yesterday, the grand jury returned a true bill against George Arthur King. salesman, who was. charged with obtaining £33/10/- at V/aimate in February last by means of false pretences. The facts alleged by the Crown were that the accused had sold what he represented to be silk rugs of I .rsian manufacture, whereas after examination they turned out to be cotton goods of English, manufacture. After the hearing of the c ele in the Magistrate’s Court in Waimate. ac sed was committed for trial, bail being allowed in self £l5O and one surety of a similar amount. When the grand jury returned a true bill yesterday morning, the case: against King was called, but the accused failed to appear. The Crown Socllitor (Mr W. D. Campbell), stated that the police had informed him that a warrant had already been issued for the arrest of King, who had absconded from bail. A search had been made throughout New Zealand, but the accused could not be found. The police were of opinion that the accused had left the country. Mr Campbell made application for the bond to be estreated. He said that the bondsman was present, and asked the Court ro fix a time for the hearing of the application.

His Honour Mr Justice Adams said it was no use going on with the case in the absence of the accused. He asked if any good would be done by standing the case down to the end of the session.

Mr Campbell said that the police did not hold out any hope of effecting an arrest, as they believed the accused had gone to Australia. His Honour said he would hear the application this morning. The witnesses could go. but they should be bound over till the next session of the Court, when they could be called on if required.
