SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The following were the successful candidates at the School Committee election, held last evening:—

Those unsuccessful were:—C. Cornwell 25, F. Chapman 20, W. J. Clarke 27. The personnel of the Committee is unchanged, with the exception that Mr Franklyn replaces Mr C. L. Fraser, who withdrew his nomination. POPPY DAY. Poppy Day in Temuka realised £47/5/-, against £3B/18/- last year. FIRE STATION LOAN. To-day a poll is to be taken upon the proposal to raise a special loan of £IOOO for the purpose of erecting a fire station in Temuka, and purchasing a motor conveyance for firemen. The poll will commence at 9 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Two polling places are the Council Chambers and the Oddfellows’ Hall. GOLF CLUB. The following were the best cards handed in for a stroke handicap competition played on Saturday:—R. Malcolm 84 (18) 66; J. T. Smart 81 (14) 67; R. H. Taylor 85 (14) 71; C. L. Fraser 84 (10) 74. DRUNKENNESS. At the Temuka Police Court yesterday Mr A. Lowrie, J.P., was on the Bench. Frederick Pimm was charged with having been found drunk in a public place, and with having been twice previously convicted within the past six months. He did not appear. Constable Southworth gave evidenc of having found defendant lying i High Street, very much the worse ( liquor. To his knowledge, defenda: had two previous convictions durin the past six months. Defendant was convicted, and fiiv £3, in default seven days’ imprisonm. in Paparua gaol. PRESENTATION. Miss Thelma Pierce, who is leav* to take up nursing at the Christchure public hospital, was tendered a sock evening at the residence of Mrs A. D Cameron, King Street. Musical item and competitions made the function most enjoyable. After supper Miss C. Hope referred to the impending departure of Miss Pierce, and said that they could not let her leave without presenting her with a memento to remind her of her friends in Temuka. Miss Hope then handed a handsome travelling rug to Miss Pierce, who made a suitable response.

PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs R. Lee, Studholnu Street, who have been holidaying at Hanmer, returned to Temuka yesterday. Miss M. Gason left Temuka yesterday to spend a holiday at Hawarden. WEDDING. At the Methodist Church on April 3rd, the marriage was solemnised of Florence Margaret, only daughter of Mr and Mrs C. Burtenshaw, of King Street, Temuka, and Bert Coira Holwell, son of the late Mr and Mrs W. Holwell, of Temuka. The Rev. A. Blakemore officiated, and Miss M. Ellis presided at the organ. The church was decorated with roses and autumn leaves by members of the Young Women’s Bible Class. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, wore a dainty frock of soft cream celanese, finished with orange blossom and true lovers knots. Her long tulle veil was held in place by a coronet of orange blossom, and she carried a bouquet of belladonna lilies, abutions and maidenhair fern, finished with streamers of satin ribbon. The only bridesmaid, Miss Sutherland, of Invercargill (cousin of the bride), was attired in a frock of pale peach georgette. With this was worn a black hat and black satin shoes. Her bouquet was of apricot shaded roses and maidenhair fern, with streamers to match. The bridegroom was attended by Mr J. L. Keast, of Invercargill, as best man. After the ceremony about 100 guests were received by the parents of the bride at the Parish Hall, where breakfast was partaken of. The bride’s mother wore a model frock of brown celanese, with hat to tone, and carried a bouquet, of helenium and pom-pom dahlias, tied with streamers of old gold ribbon. Mrs P. Hansen, sister of the bridegroom, was frocked in chocolate crepe de chene, with hat to match. Her bouquet was composed of lemon shaded dahlias and calendulas, finished with streamers of lemon ribbon. During the breakfast, items were given by Mrs W. H. Davey, Misses Levens, Bryan, Ellis, and Mr E. J. Chapman. The flower which ornamented the cake was unique in that it was used for the same purpose at the wedding of the bride’s parents. After the breakfast, the guests adjourned to the house of the bride’s parents, where the presents were displayed. Later in the afternoon, Mr and Mrs Holwell left for the north, the bride travelling in a fawn costume, with hat, shoes and stockings to tone. She wore a fox fur, the gift of the bridegroom. NOTES. Mr W. H. Smith announces that he has purchased the grocery business of Mr J. Henry, in King Street, Temuka. Particulars appear on the front page. The children’s choir festival will be held in the Dominion Theatre on Friday evening, when ten school parties, comprising 200 children, will take part. There will be individual and combined items, and a full stringed orchestra. “THE CLIMAX,” TO-NIGHT. Drama dealing with the deepest of human emotions make “The Climax,” which will be screened at Temuka tonight, a stirring picture. “The Climax” tells a moving story of a young singer, and the joys and heartaches of her climb to fame. Interwoven is a love story fraught with the intrigue that only a Latin love can conceive. The setting is a background of gardens, of sunny Italy, the historic cathedral of Milan and Italy’s famous Scala Opera House. Jean Hearsholt and Kathryn Crawford have the leading parts. Interesting supporting pictures i will also be screened.
