The whole romantic story of the engagement of the Duke and Duchess of Portland forty years ago has not been told. The then Miss Dallas Yorke was walking up and down Perth Station with some friends waiting for a train. J There came by the Duke of Portland, to whom she was a perfect stranger. Her grace and beauty attracted him on the spot, and in vain he tried to learn her name from his companions. “Get to know her I must,” he said, and through the good offices of friends he did. The chief of these friends was Lady Granby (now Violet Duchess of Rutland), and when his engagement was sealed, the Duke sent her (Lady Granby) a bracelet with a design in diamonds and sapphires of “Two hearts that beat as one.” Previous to her meeting the Duke, Miss Dallas Yorke had had her hand told by the famous Gipsy Lee on Devil’s Dyke. “You will make the finest match in England this year,” said the gipsy. “If I do I’ll send you a black silk dress,” laughed Miss Yorke.
