SOFT COALS
EXPERIMENTS BY RAILWAY DEPARTMENT. By Telegraph—Fress Association. WELLINGTON, April 15. The Railway Department has for some time been carrying out experiments with the burning of New Zealand soft coals on its locomotives. In connection with these experiments, an interesting device is now under test. This is known as the “langar combustion control” apparatus, and is a patented device intended to facilitate the burning of soft coals. The apparatus consists primarily of two units, a steam blast in the firebox, and an air draught equalised in the smoke box. The Department has been using a special form of firegrate in connection with the experiments, and it is hoped shortly to have sufficient data available to decide also the suitability of this apparatus for the use of New Zealand soft coals.
