HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

MEETING OF GOVERNORS. A meeting of the Timaru High School Board of Governors was held last night. Present—Mr J. Bitchener, M.P. (chairman), Mesdames B. H. Low and Wm. Raymond, Messrs J. G. Gow, H. H. Fraser, G. Lyons, A. H. Bain, S. D. Mason, W. Scott, and Dr. L. S. Talbot. The chairman stated that since last meeting both schools had been visited, and members had expressed pleasure at what they had seen. On the motion of Mr J. G. Gow, it was decided to send a congratulatory letter to Mr G. T. Palmer, an exmember of the staff, on his appointment to an inspectorship in Southland. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee reported that a number of tenders had been received for the extension of the Rectory dining room, and the lowest tender, that of Mr J. G. Broadhead, had been accepted. The tender of W. J. Harding and Co., for concreting round the swimming bath at the Girls’ School, had been accepted, and work in connection with both these matters had been completed in a satisfactory manner. The cottage adjoining the Girls’ School had been purchased for the sum of £SOO, but to this figure expenses amounting to £3B/15/- should be added for renovation, and the removal of outbuildings, etc. It had been decided that the purchase of a copying machine be held over until such time as the secretary made inquiries in Wellington as to whether a second-hand machine could be purchased. If this were not possible, it was decided to make the purchase from the local agent. The report was adopted.

Appointments Committee. The Appointments Committee reported that applications had been called for the position of an extra master. Applications had also been called to increase the number of “B” grade masters in accordance with the regulations. After conference with the' Rector (Mr W. Thomas), it had been decided to appoint Mr W. J. Scott to tne “D” grade position, and to promote Mr H. McClatchy to the “B” grade position. The report was adopted. General. The Steward of Reserves (Mr W. Seward) reported that the Board’s reserves at Clandeboye, Geraldine and Kakahu had been inspected, and thencondition generally was satisfactory, with the exception of one or two cases where tenants were neglecting tlieir properties. A letter was received from the Auditor-General certifying that the Board’s balance sheet was correct. The organising secretary cf the Jubilee Committee wrote extending an invitation to members of the Board to be present at the functions in connection with the Jubilee celebrations. Accounts amounting to £482/5/6 were passed for payment.
