WELCOME RAIN. After a very dry period, rain commenced to fall at about 7 o’clock on Tuesday evening, and continued to fall steadily throughout the night, the rain gauge at Mr Goodman’s registering 93 points by 9 a.m. yesterday. The weather remained dull and showery throughout the earlier part of yesterday, but it cleared late in the afternoon. and an appreciable rise in the temperature w r as - noticeable. The rain was very welcome to farmers, as it will be very beneficial to pastures and root crops. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the School Committee on Tuesday evening, there were present—Messrs A. E. Smith (chairman). A. W. Buzan. A. R. Beck. R. Longson, M. Swap, and E. B. Cooper, jun. (secretary). The chairman stated that all the necessary work had been done at the forestry reserve. Coal and firewood had been ordered for the winter. The Board forwarded the application of Mr E. J. Hall to fill the vacancy by the resignation of Mr H. Priestly.—The chairman stated that after conferring with the headmaster and members of the Committee, he wired the Board approving of the appointment. The Education Board advised that they had accepted the resignation of Miss I. Methven. The Board wrote stating that in view of the roll number at the WattLowry School being only 36, it was decided to send Miss Hopkinson as a temporary assistant, and not to make a permanent appointment in the meantime. A cheque for the sum of £2 2s was received from Mr W. F. Evans as a contribution to the junior children’s cocoa funds for the winter. It was agreed to write thanking Mr Evans for his very acceptable donation. Dental Nurse Mowat reported that 132 patients had been examined during the month, these including pupils from all the schools in the district. The secretary of the Girl Guides Committee wrote stating that Miss McAteer had offered to give the Guides a course of instruuction in first aid, and acting on the instruction of her committee she asked permission to use the dressmaking room for this purpose.—Agreed to. The headmaster (Mr W. L. Harrison) reported that the average attendance for the past four weeks was 372. roll number 391, in primary department; and attendance 79. roll 82. in the secondary department. A visit was made to the school for inspection purposes by Inspectors C. Haslam and F. Bates. The physical instructors also made a visit to the school. Regarding the swimming sports he thanked the Committee and some of the outside public who helped to make the function a success. The nett return was £2 15s, and he suggested that this form the nucleus of a fund to provide championship cups. In connection with the facilities provided to enable the children to hear the broadcasted speech of RearAdmiral Byrd, it was agreed to write thanking the manager of the picture company and others who assisted. Other details in the report were dealt with, and suggestions were approved. The Easter holidays were fixed as set down by the Education Board, which means that the school will open on Wednesday, April 23rd. Accounts amounting to £2l 7s 9d were passed for payment. The chairman said that as this was the last meeting of the present Committee he desired to thank every member for the support given him, especially the secretary and treasurer. The headmaster and staff had also cooperated with the Committee. TEMUKA R.S.A. A meeting of the committee of the Temuka Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Monday evening. Present —Messrs W. F. Evans (president), W. Oldfield, J. King, H. Wilson. H. Boulter, A. R. Beck, P. Thomas, W. A. Edgeler, and D. White (secretary). The principal business was arrangements for Poppy Day, Anzac Day and che annual meeting. It was decided to hold “Poppy Day” on 17th April. A special committee was set up to carry out details. The president reported that he had attended a meeting called by the Mayor with regard to the citizens’ commemoration service on Anzac Day. The arrangements were discussed, and the duties assigned to the Association finalised. PICTURES TO-NIGHT. An entertaining programme will be submitted at Temuka to-night, when Nancy Carroll and Buddy Rogers will appear in the leading roles in "Close Harmony,” a picture based on back stage life in a large cinema theatre. “Close Harmony” is a story of a boys’ ambition, how he realised it. The intimate glimpses of the stage and the people who earn their living there makes it a most interesting picture. “Skeets” Gallagher and Jack Oakie, as Barney and Boy, headliners in vaudeville, provide the comedy relief in the picture. They are engaged for a turn, but the heroine makes love to both and splits the team. Entertaining short features will be screened. NOTES. The Temuka Golf Club will open the season on Saturday, when a mixed foursome will be played, the first draw taking place at 1.30. Mr James Walker, manager of the Temuka Co-operative Dairy Coy. will be tendered a presentation in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Saturday evening.
