FAIRLIE.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the Committee of the Fairlie District High School held on Monday evening, the following members were present:— Messrs C. J. Talbot (chairman), H. Carlton, W. Scott, J. R. Wyber, J. Crichton, A. Cooper, R. Manchester, and G. Lyons. The chairman reported that he had made arrangements with Mr Stan. Jones to install a wireless set in Aorangi Hall for the reception of the speech to school children by RearAdmiral Byrd. Mr Jones had personally made all arrangements at no expense to the Committee. Mr Jones had gone further, and had offered to do similar work if required at some future time. Members eulogised Mr Jones for his action, and it was decided to send him a letter of appreciation. The chairman further stated that he was still collecting information to submit to the Health Department regarding the establishment of the proposed school dental clinic in Fairlie. and hoped to be able to submit something definite shortly. Mr Porter, assistant architect to the Board had visited the school, and in conjunction with several members of the Committee had made an inspection of the new water supply and the buildings generally. Several further requirements in connection with these were arranged for. It was decided to make a donation from the funds to the recent school swimming carnival. Correspondence was read from the Board relative to the purchase of an adjacent section for school garden purposes, and the Committee was advised that the application had been approved by the Board and forwarded to Wellington. A notification of the appointment of Mr Haworth, as relieving assistant in the secondary department was received. The headmaster (Mr R. Watson), reported that the roll numbers were 221 in the primary, and 37 in the secondary school, with average attendances of 209 and 34. Mr Millar, from the High School, had left to take up a position in the Nelson district, and Mr Haworth had taken his place. During the month Messrs Haslam, Graham and Bates, Inspectors, had visited the school. A school swimming carnival was held on March 11. Thanks were due to Mrs Whitehead and Miss Wyber for prizes for learners’ events, and to the Fairlie Swimming Club for medals for the boys’ and girls’ championships. A wireless demonstration was given the pupils to hear Admiral Byrd’s speech to the school children of the Dominion, and the thanks of the staff and pupils were due Mr S. Jones.

Votes of thanks were accorded those who had helped in the successful running of the swimming carnival in the Fairlie Public Baths. The chairman said that the statement of receipts and expenditure for the past year had been forwarded to the Board for audit purposes. Unfortunately the credit balance which existed at the beginning of the year had disappeared, and a slight debit balance was disclosed. The incidental grants did not nearly cover the expenses of caretaking and heating the premises, and a considerable amount had been spent in improvements. The headmaster suggested that more subsidies might be obtainable, and it was decided to go into this aspect of the school's finances. It was announced that the annual meeting of householders would be held on April 28. The matter of suitably celebrating the jubilee of the school would be considered, and ex-pupils would me invited to attend with the object of forming a committee to further this object.

The chairman thanked members for their co-operation during the year. Some changes had taken place in that time, notably a change in the position of headmaster. The indications were that Mr Watson and the Committee would mutually work in furtherance of the best interests of the school. Thanks were due Mr Lyons for the excellent manner in which he carried out his duties as secretary. Mr K. Carlton for the Committee, thanked the chairman for his remarks, and in turn, acknowledged the services Mr Talbot had rendered to the school.

The secretary and the headmaster thanked the Committee for its appreciative references to their work.
