ELECTION DOINGS IN CHICAGO.

Violence Has Full Play. OUTBREAKS OF LAWLESSNESS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copy -lght.) NEW YORK, April 8. The penchant of the city of Chicago for violence in elections was • given full play to-day, when between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 voters of Illinois t went to the polls in the Republican i primary election to choose the party’s I Federal Senatorial nominee. I The choice lies between Mrs Ruth j McCormick, whose father and husband j have been United States Senators, | and who herself is now a member of I Congress, and Senator Charles Doneen, 1 who defeated Mrs McCormick’s hus- | band six years ago for the same ■ nomination. The campaign, which has been extremely bitter, culminated in Chicago to-day with an attempt to kidnap an alderman, one case of shooting and one of bombing. Reports of gangster raids and other instances of lawlessness have also been received. Seven men brandishing pistols crowded the alderman’s automobile j against a kerb, but the police interfered, saved the official, and captured three of his assailants. The State Attorney, Mr John A. Swanson, threatened that indictments would follow if the police, under the control of Mayor (“Big Bill”) Thompson, showed partiality in enforcing the j election laws. Charges were made that 500,000 fraudulent names had been registered for voting, and reports all day long from the “bad land” wards of Chicago indicated that strong arm methods | were playing their usual part. Certainty of Election. I Mrs McCormick is virtually certain : of victory over Mr Doneen, carrying I Cook County by an indicated plurality lof above 150,000 votes. The lady is also leading elsewhere in the State.
