CANADA’S NEW TARIFF.

Control Of Importations. HOLD-UP OF DAIRY PRODUCE. 'United Press Association—By Electrle Telegraph—Copyrl ght.) (Received April 9. 7.45 p.m.) VANCOUVER, April 8. A Fredericton (New Brunswick) message states that a resolution that New Zealand butter be subjected to an increased duty in order to stimulate industry in New Brunswick and other sections of Canada was adopted to-day by the Agriculture Committee of the Provincial Legislature. Ready to Negotiate. That Canada is ready to negotiate a complete exchange of preferences with Australia was announced by Mr James Malcolm, Minister of Trade and Commerce, to a delegation representing the lumber interests of British Columbia. The matter will be fully discussed, he said, with Mr J. E. Fenton, when he visits Ottawa on his way home from the Naval Conference. Mr Malcolm hinted that preliminary negotiations were now in progress, and that action is particularly sought in connection with Canadian lumber. The delegation told the Minister that the recent trip to Australia showed that the country was heartily in favour of extending trade within the Empire on a fair basis.

Mr Malcolm reminded the delegation tlTat his predecessor, the late Hon. J. A. Robb, two years ago, had expressed full accord with the proposal for full preference between the two countries. The delegation suggested that the Dominion Government should establish Canadian credits in Australian banks, to facilitate the present financial conditions in Australia. Their visits there had shown the wisdom of some such arrangement.

It had also shown a decided desire on the part of Australia that Canada should import Australian wines, which the delegation stated appeared decidedly reasonable and possible.

MISSING NURSE. DRAMATIC REVIVAL OF MYSTERY. (United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyrigh t.) (Received April 9, 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, April 8. The mystery surrounding the discovery of the body of Nurse May Daniels, on the outskirts of Boulogne on January 26, 1927, has been dramatically revived by the arrival of M. Louis Ligier, head of the Boulogne detective service, at Scotland Yard. The visit is the outcome of information given by a convict in Farkhurst prison, who stated that he overheard a fellow convict discussing the mystery. M. Ligier attaches importance to the statement, as he has always considered that Miss Daniels, who has been missing since October, 1926, was the victim of foul play.
