NEWS AND NOTES

When the Aorangi was quarantined at Sydney recently there were aboard a number of wealthy American tourists who joined in with the rest of the passengers in a protest against the treatment that the authorities were meting out. When a reply came that if the passengers didn’t like it, they could catch the Aorangi back again, two or three of these Americans took the authorities at their word and recrossed the Tasman to New Zealand, to the Dominion’s gain.

A resident of Grosvenor Street, Grey Lynn. Auckland, called at a newspaper office recently with a queer looking, many-legged, large insect in a small bottle, and explained that they were particularly numerous in his part of suburban Auckland. He said that after a swift dash he had intercepted the visitor on a bedroom wall, and he requested help in the matter of identification. The bottle and the contents were duly handed over to the Auckland Museum authorities, who have identified the insect as one named Seutigcra Maculata, a centipede which frequents houses and sunny walls. It is said to be far the swiftest of centipedes. It lives on small insects. In spite of its hairy legs and repulsive appearance, it is claimed to be quite harmless.

After a recent sporting meeting a gatekeeper found himself £1 short in his takings. He could not account for it and the committee, never doubting his honesty, concluded that in the rush he may have dropped a £1 note or given away too much in change. It was a surprised gatekeeper when a few days later a man approached him in the street and, after explaining how he had received tickets and in the rush failed to pay for them, tendered a £1 note. The gatekeeper was thankful and he went to the secretary and paid the missing £1 which had .caused him considerable anxiety.
