At the Police Cijurt this morning, John James Arthur (48), married, with eleven children, appeared on five charges of obtaining money from John Russell, by false pretences. The amount involved is £I7BO, spread over a period of nearly seven years. The evidence showed that the money was obtained from an elderly fellow employee, who had known accused nearly all his life. Accused led Russell to believe that the money was going to various people, being covered by mortgages. Accused, in a statement to the police, said he had been betting fairly heavily at the start, and needed money to meet his obligations. He was in hopes of securing a big win and pay the money back. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was refused. BURGLARY CHARGES. By Telegraph—Press Association. ,v DARGAVILLE, April 7. A young man, whose name was ordered to be suppressed until all other charges were heard to-morrow, was arrested at the Whangarei races on Saturday afternoon on a charge of burglary at the local branch of the North Auckland Farmers’ Co-oper-ative Association. It is alleged that he stole a sum of approximately £2O.

Accused appeared at the police court to-day. The burglary, which took place on Friday night, was particularly daring. There are several other charges to be heard.
