SCOTTISH SOCIETY

ANNIVERSARY GATHERING. The Scottish Society held its first anniversary gathering in the Scottish Hall on Tuesday evening when there was an attendance of about 90 members, who had been closely connected with the movement for the erection of a new hall. A banquet was held in honour of the occasion and the function was an outstanding success. The chief (Mr W. Duncan Hume) jocularly remC.r—4 that they were all proud to celebrate the birthday of the “baby” who was now one year old, and by the time he was two years of age, he would not require nourishing as he was well-reared in a hard working Scottish family of workers and that the baby would be able to walk “on his own.” Mr Hume stated that the Scottish Hall was a fitting monument to the work of the Ladies Committees, past and present, and also to the Men’s Committees and all those who had the interests of the Scottish Society at heart. The Society was in a strong financial position, and the new building was considered to be one of the finest halls of its kind in the Dominion, and admirably adapted for the purpose for which it was erected.

Ex-Chiefs and Councillors Jas. Emslie and W. Young also spoke in laudatory terms of the success which had attended the Society.

Apologies were received fro Mrs. W. Panton, lady president of the bazaar, and ex-Chief and Councillor J. Ramage who were unable to be present on account of illness.

The skirl of the pipes and the marching of pipers to the banquet hall, the chief and chieftains following, was the signal for the opening of proceedings. The following was the programme:— “The King”; orchestral selection, Scottish orchestra; toast, “Scottish Society” proposed by ex-Chief A. M. Paterson, and responded to by the Chief (W. Duncan Hume); song, Miss M. Davidson; violin solo, Mr Williams; toast, “The Ladies,” proposed by ex-Chief and Councillor Emslie and responded to by ex-Chief J. V/. McLean; song, Councillor W. Donaldson; humorous Scottish songs, ex-Chiefs and Councillors Young and Emslie; toast, “Orchestra and M.C.,” proposed by Chieftain A. Millar and responded to by Councillors G. Campbell and J. Thomson; song, Mrs Niall; toast, “The Secretary and Treasurer,” proposed by Councillor Donaldson, responded to by treasurer, W. S. Young; pipe selection, Mr S. Guthrie.
