CROQUET.

DEMONSTRATION BY ENGLISH CHAMPION. On Friday, February 28th, in beautiful weather, Mr Windsor Richards, of England, by invitation from the Aorangi Croquet Club, gave a lecture on the game to its members, and at the same time illustrated on the croquet courts the principal and most important shots in the game. The lecturer then went on to show how these various strokes were essential in three and foui -.11 breaks; also in negotiating a triple peel, which is the height of a croquet player's ambition to-day. Mr Windsor Richards is regarded as second to none in England as a referee, instructor and exponent of croquet tactics generally, therefore his lecture was full of interest throughout to the players and great enthusiasm was shown by all in attempting the different strokes under his supervision. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies in the pavilion, and their guest was heartily thanked by the president on behalf of the Club for his much appreciated efforts to improve croquet in this district. A similar afternoon was given last Saturday afternoon by the Timaru Croquet Club, under ideal weather conditions. A large gathering of croquet enthusiasts witnessed a series of interesting exhibitions of the game by Mr. Windsod Richards, and great keenness was displayed by players in negotiating strokes according to his methods and instructions. Afternoon tea was then partaken of, and afterwards an insight into the triple peel and other matters of interest brought a most enjoyable afternoon to a close. Mr Windsor Richards was thanked by the executive for his kind efforts to improve croquet in their midst, and thus give them all a better idea how the game should really be played.
