ORARI RIVER.
THE ENCROACMENT PROBLEM. The Orari river problem, the task of keeping the river within her banks between the sea and the railway line, is again becoming acute, owing to recent floods. The settlers interested, the Geraldine County Council (as a River Board), and Mi* T. D. Burnett, are anxious to have the Minister of Public Works down to inspect the position. Mr Burnett, on the 20th., wired the Minister as follows: — “Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Public Works, Wellington.—River encroachment problems are becoming acute in South Canterbury, particularly at Orari. Would welcome a visit from you. Could you wire me date of promised visit in order to meet settlers and River Board?—T. D. Burnett.” On Saturday Mr Burnett received the following reply:— “Your telegram re river encroachment problems duly received. I would very much like to inspect the locality, but regret just at present that I am , quite unable to give you any definite indication as to when it will be possible to make a visit to that district. I will, however, keep the request in mind, and will visit Timaru so soon as jit can convenitently be arranged.—E. A. Ransom.”
