BEAUTY AIDS FOR THE OUT-OF-DOORS GIRL.
SUCCESSFUL, THOUGH NOT ELABORATE. If your face is so sensitive that the least wind causes it to become red and Irritated, try a soothing lotion in the form of a mustard-spoonful of powdered starch dissolved in the washing water. If you must go outdoors soon afterwards, reduce the temperature uptil it is merely lukewarm.
■ For skins that have already become rough, a little olive oil in the washbowl each morning will prove valuable. Do not overload the water, however; half a teaspoonful will be sufficient in most cases. Dry on a soft towel to absorb the moisture quickly, and finish off with a rather coarse towel which will invigorate and tone up the skin. Girls who find a yellowish tinge on their necks and faces will derive much benefit from a rice-water wash. Prepare the solution by simmering one teaspoonful of rice in one pint of water; strain, add ten drops of simple tincture of benzoin, mix well and bottle for use. Add two tablespoonfuls of the lotion to the washing water, using little or no soap. This treatment will also do away with many minor skin blemishes.
One of the best all-round lotions for protecting the skin is prepared by beating up one fresh egg and adding two ounces of rosewater, half an ounce of glycerine, five drops of tincture of benzoin, half a teaspoonful of superfine oatmeal, and the juice of one orange. Beat the whole for two minutes, bottle, and cork tightly. Add a tablespoonful of the lotion to the washing water in the evening, dry on a soft towel, and finish off with a few rubs with chamois leather. As the complexion improves, the treatment may be dropped to once or twice a we§k. It is almost magical in effect, and it is perfectly harmless.
