The annual picnic of the Smithfield Freeking Works’ employees will be held at Victoria Park, Waimate, on Saturday, Ist March.

A mass meeting of the postal workers of Kieff (Russia) decided not to deliver telegrams, letters, or parcels to persons in Holy Orders. A similar boycott is being arranged in other cities, and likewise a refusal to print religious matter.

Owing to the comparatively bad weather experienced in the earlier part of this summer, most drapery stores are heavily stocked with summer frocks and other fashion goods. Don’s policy has always been to carry over nothing whatever from one season to another. To effect a complete clearance, a drastic move has been decided upon in the form of a “£2 Day” on Monday, when all model frocks will be sold at 40 - each, and the others at similarly ridiculous prices

Several persons were killed or seriously injured at the munitions depot at Liossia, an Athenian suburb, when workmen and soldiers dropped a crate of hand grenades which they were unloading from a lorry. Fire followed, destroying a number of buildings. Everyone near the lorry was killed and 200,000 grenades burned.

A dispersal sale is to be held at Burnside, Elderslie, Oamaru, on Friday, 28th February, at 10.30, when all the stud Romney and Border Leicester sheep belonging to the estate of the late J. F. Reid will be offered by auction. Particulars of the various lots of sheep are advertised, and as the flocks are being sold to wind up the Estate, they are all for bona flde sale. The Burnside sheep are known throughout the Dominion, and breeders, desiring to improve their flocks, would be well advised to attend. Transport to the sale can be arranged on application to the selling agents.

The Fairlie School picnic of about 600 persons, will visit Timaru on 27th February.

The Tekapo sale, which is recognised as the biggest stock sale of the season in South Canterbury, is to be held on Saturday. March 15. It is anticipated that entries this year will be considerably in excess of those of last year.

The vessel is one of the Gustav Erickson school ships, and is manned by twenty Finnish apprentices. It is quoted on the re-insurance market in London at 40 per cent.
