FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ COUNCIL.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the tsuuth Canterbury Friendly Societies’ Council was held in the A.O.F. Lodge room on 20th. inst. The president, Brother Batchelor, presided over thirty delegates from the various Lodges affiliated. Before commencing business, the president welcomed the extra delegates who were invited to be present and hoped they would go back to their Lodges and be able to report what good work the Council was doing. After routine business, the Auditors presented the balance sheet for the year ended 31st. December 1929, and reported thereon as follows: Hospital Bed Scheme:—Receipts, contributions £628/17/-, balance at Ist. July, 1929, £97/11/2; total £726/8,^2. Expenditure, cash to Hospital Board £467/17/6, management expenses £65/1/-, entrance fees transferred to management fund £l9/16/-, balance on hand £173/13/8; total £726/8/2. Included in the balance of £173/13/8 were fees paid in advance for first quarter in 1930. £IOB, leaving this fund in credit £65/13/8. Some difficulty was experienced in getting the Minister of Health’s consent for the renewal of the present agreement, on the ground that the fees paid should guarantee 50 per cent, of the total fees charged, and they were now able to report that for the twelve months ended 31st. December, 1929, the actual figures were as follows:—Total fees charged £895/9/6, cash paid for year £467/17/6, average for twelve months 52.22 per cent. The Minister of Health had approved the renewal of the contract for a further twelve months to 31st. December, 1930. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: — President, Bro. J. T. Ellis, vicepresident. Bro T. C. Baker; secretary. Bro. A. F. Boys (re-elected): treasurer, Bro. D. Cosgrove (re-elected); auditors, Bros Baker and Jordan. A hearty vote of thanks was recorder to the Council members of the South Canterbury Hospital Board (Bros. Griffiths and Goodall), for the good work done during the year. Both brothers returned thanks After the meeting a coffee supper was partaken of. and a very pleasant hour was spent in friendly games of euchre, crib and five hundred. During the social part of the programme, the president called on Bro. Griffiths, a past president of the Council, to make a small presentation to the retiring president, Bro. J. "Batchelor. Bro Griffiths presented Bro. Batchelor with a P.P. gold badge, and stated that be had well earned this small memento. He considered that Bro Batchelor had been one of the best presidents the Council had had.
