CHILD STRANGLED. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, February 21. A distressing fatality occurred at Roslvn this morning, when Patricia Valeria McDonald (3), inadvertently I strangled herself with a window cord. The little girl, who was a daughter of I Mr Frederick John McDonald, Chap--1 man Street, was put down in a single bed by her mother, at 10.15 for her morning sleep. When the mother went back to get her up for dinner, about two hours later, she found the child hanging with her head through a window cord, and her toes about four inches off the floor. Dr. Stain, who was called in, could only pronounce life extinct. DEATH FROM BURNS. Bv Telecrrnph Association. CHRISTCURCH, February 21. As a result of burns received earlier in the day, Mrs Marjorie Mather, wife of Charles P. Mather, died in St. George's Hospital at 8.30 this evening. It is supposed she received the burns from an explosion of petrol in a shed at the rear of her house. Mrs Mather went to the shed at 8.40 a.m., and a I few minutes later another occupant of | the premises, Miss Kent, heard I screams, and found Mrs Mather standing in the shed with her clothes on fire. Miss Kent wrapped Mrs Mather in rugs she snatched from the clothes line, and extinguished the flames, but Mrs Mather was very badly burned.

Through being accidentally struck on the head by a winch at his work this afternoon James Fitzpatrick (54), a railway employee, married, received a compound visceral fracture of the skull, and laceration of the face. His condition before he underwent an operation this evening was reported to be serious. PECULIAR ACCIDENT. Stewart Leary, a telegraph messenger, aged 16 years, experienced a re- ! markable escape from serious injury | to-day. He was riding a bicycle with I a pea-rifle slung over his back, when jit accidentally discharged the bullet entering the upper portion of the right arm. The bullet was removed later at the hospital.
