WINCHESTER.

THE LIBRARY. The annual meeting of the Winchester Library was held on Monday evening. Mr L. H. Orbell was elected chairman. Also present were:—Messrs J. S. Smith, T. H. Langford, D. Scannell, D. Alexander, P. Surridge, and W. J. Moore. The secretary (Mr D. Scannell) presented the annual report and balance sheet. The report stated that the credit balance, £SO/16/1, showed an increase of £lO/5/7 on last year’s figures. The Government subsidy was £9/15/-, Geraldine County Council grant £5/10/-, members’ subscriptions £l2/17/6 (decrease of £2/16/-). During the year 90 new books were purchased from the Christchurch Commercial Travellers’ Association, at a cost of £3/7/6. On the motion of Messrs Orbell and Alexander, the annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr L. H. Orbell (who thanked the members for electing him to that position again). He said he was sorry to see such a small attendance at the annual meeting. Mr D. Alexander was elected secretary, pro tern. (Mr Alexander was not keen to take up the position throughout the year); committee, Messrs J. S. Smith, A. G. Kimber, D. Scannell, T. H. Langford, and J. C. Mcßratney; caretaker, Mr P. Surridge. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Surridge and Mrs Mcßratney for looking after the bookroom on Tuesday afternoon for the benefit of country members. A vote of thanks was accorded to the caretaker, Mr Surridge. It was resolved that the secretary give out the books on book nights; when unable to be present he is to arrange for a substitute. Mr Langford brought up the matter of the Hobson Trust. He said the Geraldine County Council would not pay over the money till the plans and specifications were sent to the Council office, and he had arranged with Mr Taylor to draw up the plans. The Committee confirmed Mr Langford’s action. Accounts to the amount of £lO/7were passed for payment.
