LABOUR IN OFFICE.

Questions To Ministers

LAW AMENDMENTS SUGGESTED. (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received February 5. 7.40 p.m.) LONDON. February 4. In the House of Commons, Mr William Allen Inquired if the Budget would make any discrimination in favour of income derived from Home and Imperial investments. Mr Snowden: “I cannot anticipate the Budget. It is a matter of opinion whether taxation at present discriminated in favour of capital invested abroad.” The Talkies. Sir William Knowles suggested, in the interest of the protection of the English language, that the importation of American talky films should be restricted. Mr W. Graham (President of the Board of Trade) said these were admitted under existing legislation, and he was not prepared directly to restrict American talkies. Mr Thurtle: “Would you accept a Scotsman as an authority on the English language?” Mr Graham, emphatically: “Certainly.” (Laughter.) Share Frauds. As a sequel to the Hatry case, the Hon. A. M. Samuel suggested an amendment to the Companies Act designed to reduce the possibility of fraud, by shortening the interval between issues of allotment letters, temporary scrip, and the date of exchange of the final scrip therefore. Mr Graham undertook that this and other suggestions would be considered when the introduction of amending legislation was considered.
