With 40,122 public employees awaiting their upnpaid salaries, the Ofcty Council capitulated to an ultimatum by Strawn’s Citizens Rescue Committee backed by about fifty millionaires, who will advance the money needed through a purchase tax in anticipation of the* warrants. Mayor Thompson continues to regard the Strawn’s committeemen as “fake reformers,” and refuses to cooperate with other officials, who see no other way to obtain the money. Strawn offers on condition that the city officials use the money economically in a manner acceptable to the Citizen’s Committee. HAMPERED BY BANDITS. SEVENTH GANG MURDER IN ONE WEEK. Bandits continued to ply their trade daringly. One of the most spectacular raids occurred when gunmen took possession of a mansion in Kenilworth suburb, .shut the owner with his wife and servants in a small cedar room, ransacked the house from end to end, with enormous loot, which included jewellery, plate, money, and clothing. They then escaped in a motor car.
