TIMARU BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in St. Paul’s Schoolroom, Highfield, on Tuesday afternoon. There was a good attendance of members and friends. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Mcllroy was passed. The treasurer's report was very satisfactory, though there were still some members’ subscriptions to be handed in. Mrs Cave, who had been appointed to represent the Union on the National Council of Women, reported fully on the business done, and stated that the remits—concerning (1) boys selling papers in the bars of licensed houses, and (2) the difference in duty on manufactured woollen and artificial goods, etc.—submitted by that body, were endorsed by the meeting. To commemorate Maori Day, approprite prayers were offered, and a paper suitable to the occasion was read by Mrs Butcher. In the absence of a Sailors’ Rest report, Mrs Norrie told the meeting of a well-attended Sunday tea and service, organised by the Highfield members during the month. She referred also to letters of praise and gratitude which are continually arriving at the Rest from all parts of the woild. Magazines had been received from Mrs McCaskill; comfort bags from Mrs Tilbroolc; donations from Palmerston North, Mayfield and Ashburton W.C.T. Unions; and annual donations from Timaru Harbour Board, Timaru Borough Council, N.Z. Shipping Co., National Mortgage and Agency Co., J. R. Bruce and Co., A. B. Annand and Co., C.F.C.A., N.Z. Express Co., W. Evans and Co., Dalgety and Co., Mrs Robertson and Mr G. T. Dawson. A hearty vote of thanks was passed for these donations, and it was decided to make an appeal for magazines for the sailors at Christmas. During the afternoon Miss Crombie sang “The Better Laud” and “A Brown Bird Singing.” She received the hearty thanks of the meeting, as did the Highfield ladies for afternoon tea they served. Three new. members were enrolled.
