SUN RETURNS IN THE SOUTH.

BIG DAY WITH BYRD’S MEN. LISTENING TO THE ZEPPELIN SIGNALS. (By Russell Owen—Copyrighted 1929, by "New York Times” Company, and “St. Louis Post-Despatch.”) BAY OF WHALES, August 24. "The Zeppelin’s signals were heard yesterday, coming so clearly we could hear them on the loud-speaker. Late in the evening, we heard the position given as 1500 miles from Tokyo, flying 300 metres above the sea. "The sun returned yesterday, as the regular sun should, to send its light flashing across the barrier top, to spill over the edge and touch the tops of the Ice masses on the bay with fire. Far down on the south cliff, the walls reflected brilliant and golden light, for which we have waited so long. “The ice cliffs sparkled like gigantic mirrors, winking back a message of welcome to the sun, as if there was some secret understanding between them, and they were amused at our boisterous happiness. The winter is far from over, and our coldest weather is still to come. “The surface snow everywhere round the camp- is many feet higher than w'hen we started hibernation. "The fly was raised to-day by the Commander’s order, and as it whipped out in a twenty mile wind, everyone uncovered, although it was 40deg. below, and the wind gripped our ears and noses painfully. Then the British flag was unfurled and the Norwegian, and everyone saluted each with bared head. The ceremony occupied several minutes, and when it was over, there was a rush for cove.r Jack O’Brien hastily unfurled a 1 green pennant for Ireland, and did the snake dance round the doorway, but the wind was biting and soon overcame even the the Hibernian enthusiasm. We celebrated the big day with a turkey dinner.” (All rights for publication reserved throughout the World—Wireless t( “ New York Times.")
