SURGEONS CONFER.
IMPORTANT DISCUSSED. HONOLULU, August 23. The Surgeons’ Conference adopted resolutions to form a permanent organisation for the Pacific Area, with headquarters at Honolulu, and meeting there every three years, and including a section on hospital standardisation. It was agreed that the conference was an outstanding success. The delegates are sure that a permanent organisation of this type would contribute to the better understanding between the nations. Dr. Frances emphasised the importance of examining tonsils, even when the surface indication of infection was absent. He said that all patients suffering symptoms, even remotely attributable to toxic absorption, should have a careful nasopharyngeal investigation. He was opposed to the popular belief that tonsils should be removed in middle age, and also denied that the tonsils operation was likely to injure a singer’s voice. Many of his patients had received beneficial results. Dr. Francis urged the surgeons to consider tonsilectomy as a major operation, requiring a general anaesthetic wherever possible. Dr. Royle described his experiments illustrating the increase in muscle tone, following stimulation of the sympathec nervous system.
