CHRISTCHURCH NEWS.

(frav Oar Owa Corrwpoiitfwt.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 25. Canterbury’s Shield Prospects. The Canterbury Rugby fifteen were out m a game with Southland on Saturday. Though Canterbury won comfortably, the team did not play an impressive game. The Southlanders put up a very good fight, and with a little luck would have scored at least two more tries. Canterbury’s prospects in the match against Wairarapa on Wednesday, for the Ranfurly Shield, are much discussed, and the critics are more hopeful than confident. The loss of Dailey, who was injured in Australia, is a severe blow, as Dailey is still easily the best half. High Schools’ Tourney. The Secondary Schools’ tournament will open to-morrow. Timaru High will play Otago, and Christchurch will play Southland. The finals will be played on Thursday. Snow and Hail. The weather is still very cold, and a good deal of snow has fallen in the back country. A hailstorm visited part of the city on Saturday afternoon. Bruce Changes Hands. The pacer. Bruce, which has been in the limelight lately, was sold on Saturday by auction, to Mr J. Shaw, of Kaikoura, for £l3. Coast Children Miss Train. The children from the West Coast, who have been visiting Christchurch for the Winter Show, returned to their homes to-day, being taken back to the West Coast by the goods train, which left Christchurch this morning, before the ordinary West Coast express. Some trouble was caused by eight of the children who had got separated from the party, and missed the train. However, they were soon assured by the stationmaster (Mr H. D. Lowry) that everything would be all right, and room was found for them on the express. Games Postponed. The Canterbury Hockey Association was unable to proceed with its annual five-a-side tournament this afternoon. The rains of this week had left only one of the men’s hockey grounds in Hagley Park fit for play to-day, and the tournament could not be carried out on only one ground.
