THE CHURCH AND THE STATE.
Difficult Days In Malta. POPE’S LATEST PRONOUNCEMENT. (United Press Association—By Electr'4 Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received August 23, 8.30 p.m.) ROME, August 23. The Pope, addressing six hundred pilgrims from Malta, defended his own attitude towards Lord Strickland, in a passage stating that no credence rihould be placed on those calling themselves good Catholics, who did not obey the Bishops, and did not follow the thoughts of the Pope. Official Malta circles welcome the Pope’s moderate terms, which are in strong contrast to Cardinal Gasparri’s earlier and more emphatic utterance. It, is now clear that the ministers have not been ex-communicated, and the deplorable incident can be regarded as closed.
