A PLEASANT CEREMONY
THE QUEEN SPEAKS. The Queen drove from Buckingham Palace recently to lay the foundation stone of the new Central Club which the Young Women’s Christian Association is erecting in Great Russell Street, W.C.1., writes a Londoner. The club is intended for the use of girls and women engaged in business and the professions in London. It will be the largest women’s club in Great Britain, containing 30 bedrooms, a large hall, a library, a chapel, a lounge, in which members can meet men and women friends, a restaurant, a gymnasium, and numerous other amenities. The ceremony took place inside a -large marquee, which had the atmosphere of a garden party. There were many beautiful frocks and Coldstream Guardsmen in full dress played music. The spot where the Queen laid the foundation stone was surrounded bv decorations in pale blue and white. As the Queen entered all eyes gazei with admiration at her stately, appearance in a bautitful coat of silver, blue and gold brocade, blue and silver. She wore a silver turban. The Queen spread the mortar with a trowel which Sir Edwin Lutyens, the architect of the building, presented to her, and tapped the stone with a mallet. Her words of dedication were picked up by a microphone and for the second time wireless listeners heard the Queen speak.
