Government statistics Just Issued refute the charges that the Canadian dairying Industry is languishing because of the competition of New Zealand butter and Australian products. An official report shows that the output of the dairy factories In 192 a was valued at 145,000,0000 dollars, being 8,500,000 dollars over the previous year. There was less butter manufactured by 6,000,0001 b, but this Is the effect by 5,000,0001 b more cheese. During last year, Canada produced 170,000,0001 b. of creamery butter, valued at 65,000,00 dollars, practically the same money total as the year before, with prices 1 cent and 1 1-3 cent per lb. better than In 1928. The average price of butter to-day Is higher than at any time for eight years. The average price was highest In British Columbia, where New Zealand and Australian competition was naturally keenest. Dr. Ruddlck (Dominion Dairy Commissioner) says the most outstanding feature this year Is the large percentage of Increase In the production of butter In the Canadian Prairie provinces, compared with two yean ago. Their net returns last year equalled the prices received for sweet cream shipped to the United States. Tho latter trade may soon be cut off by thhlgh tariff.
