At Forest Hills, with the first ira- ' portant upset in the national women’s | singles in the defeat of Mrs Shepherd I Barron (Great Britain) by Miss Pal- | frey, has come the rise of a new star ! in American tennis, namely, Miss Sarah | Palfrey, who is sixteen years of age ! and just out of the juniors. She playi ed a remarkably heady game in gaining 1 an 8-10, 6-10, 6-4 victory over the much more experienced British player. Miss Palfrey, with the development of a t more vigorous service, will go far, for i she is already an exceptional volleyer and extremely quick as well as accur- ‘ ate on both the forehand and backhand. ' Miss Betty Nuthall (Great Britain) | defeated Miss Gertrude Dwyer (New ! York) 6-3, 6-1. Miss Helen Wills (U.S.A.) defeated ! Mrs Charlott Homsmer Chap, 6-0, 6-1. Mrs Coveil (Great Britain) defeated Mrs Einbcott (Boston), 6-1, 6-2. Mrs Watson (Great Britain) defeated Mrs Lamme Rye, 6-2, 6-0. Ladies’ Doubles Championship. Mesdames H. D. Eaton and Bronson (New York) defaulted to Miss Helen Jacobs and Miss Betty Nuthall. Mrs Watson and Mrs Mitchell (Great Britain) defeated Mrs Hester and Mrs Lamme, 6-1, 6-1.
