BRILLIANT GOLF IN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. MORPETH’S SUPERIOR PLAY. (United Press Association—By Electrie Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received August 21, 12.25 a.m.) ADELAIDE, August 21. It was ideal weather for the first qualifying round at the opening of the golf championship to-day. There were eighty-three competitors. The holder of the title, Fred. Popplewell took 86 on the morning round. A large gallery followed Ivo Whltton and Rufus Stewart, whose scores were 75 and 77 respectively. But the New Zealander, Morpeth, took pride of place, with W. Corry, with 73. Morpeth played beautifully, finishing as strong as a lion with a brace of fours, one of which came at the 500 yards (seventeenth hole), by a clean straight drive, a No. 1 iron, and two putts. After this, the other four was easy. His card read 36-37. W. Corry also returned a 73, Ed. Bissett 74, Whitton 75, Nettlefold 75, James and McDowell 76, Stewart, Quirk, McMahon 77, Eyre. Morrison, Apperly 78, Hattersley, Russell and Woods 79. Morpeth and Hattersley, who were paired, but failed in the national foursomes, are described in the Press as among the longest hitters in golf today. “Morpeth,” says a Melbourne newspaper, “is a mighty hitter. He is generally twenty yards ahead of Apperley in his tee shots. The New Zealand champion achieved something worth while to consistently out distance the Sydney player, as Apperley hits no mean ball when he gets it properly.” Rufus Stewart who won the professionals’ match, with rounds 74-72, beat Bolger 72-75 by one stroke, and Eyre 75-72 by one stroke. The youthful Bolger produced some of the best golf of the day. The New Zealander, Shaw, who did 74 in the first round, finished badly, and took 81 for the next. MORPETH IN FORM. Giving a brilliant display, Sloan Morpeth tied for the !ead in the first round of the Open Championship, at Seatoun to-day, with W. Corrie (New South Wales professional), with 73 —36 out and 37 in. Morpeth, who was ill for a few days, putted accurately, saving many holes, otherwise the result might have been disastrous. Mclntosh and Shaw 7 are 31 and 84 respectively, Bissett 74. Whitton, Nettlefold and Heard 75, E. Rufus Stewart
