CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

JUVENILE COMPETITIONS. FESTIVAL IN SEPTEMBER. Considerable interest is being taken in the South Canterbury Caledonian Society’s Juvenile Competitions, which are to be held in the Scottish Hall from Monday, September 2, till Thursday, September 5, and which are being promoted by the Caledonian Queen Committee. Competitions are of great value to the younger generation, and owing to the inability of the South Canterbury Competitions Society to hold a festival this year, the Caledonian Society have decided to step in and do what they can to encourage talent amongst the younger people of South Canterbury. The competitions are open to residents between the Waitaki and Rangitata rivers, and the classes

in each section are confined (with one exception) to competitors under the age of eighteeen years. A varied programme has been arranged. There are classes in national and fancy dancing, music, elocution, and singing, and since the preparation of the schedule the Committee has decided to include additional classes for younger children. In National dancing a class has been added for Highland Fling for boys and girls under 11, and in fancy dancing a character dance under 11, operatic dance under 11, and a fancy dance of any description under 16, open to those who have not won a prize at time of entry. The elocution schedule has been added to by recitation (boy or girl under 11), and sight reading under 16.

The judge.; for the competitions will be Mrs G. A. M. Martin (pianoforte), and Miss A. Nevill-Smith (instrumental and vocal, Mr A. E. Lawrence (elocution), and Mr W. Burns (dancing). A glance through the well-compiled schedule will reveal an excellent dancing section. National classes will include Highland Fling (boys or girls under 11, also under 13, 18 and 12), the latter being restricted to non-prize-winners at time of entry; sword dance (boys or girls under 13 and also under , 18); Sean Triubhas (boys or girls under 13, and also under 18); Sailors’ Hornpipe (boys or girls under 16); Irish Jig (boys or girls under 16); Highland and Irish Reels C ~>ys or girls under 18). The fancy portion of this section will comprise: Toe dances (Uricler 14 and also under 18); operatic dances (under 11 and also under 14 ancl 18); character dances (under 11 ancjalso under 14 and 18); clog dance (under 18); skipping rope (under 18); dance duos (under 14 and 18); fancy dance (under 16) for non-previous prizewinners. Provision is made in the Musical Section for piano solos and duets (boys or girls under 14 and also under 18); violin solos (boys or girls under 14 and also under 18), and solo, any instrument (except piano and violin, boy or girl under 18). The Elocution classes will cater for boys or girls under 13 and 18 in recitations; humorous recitations, and recitations for boys or girls under 14 and also under 18; recitations with musical accompaniment, for boys or girls under 16 and also under 20; and story without words for boy or girl under 18. Sight reading (under 16) will be included, while a special class for those who have not won a prize at the time of entry will be provided in a recitation, under 14.

The vocal portion contains songs for boys or girls under 12 and also under 15 and 18; character songs under 14 and also under 18; humorous song under 18, and a vocal duet under 18. There is a special song for boy or girl under 14, who has not won a prize at the time of entry. In the vocal instrumental and elocution sections, competitors will choose their own selections.
