BACHELORS’ AND SPINSTERS’ BALL. At a meeting of the bachelors and spinsters, Mr E. R. O’Neill presided over a good attendance. It was reported that the recent ball had returned a credit balance of £4. It was decided to place the balance in the Post Office Savings Bank to the credit of the Committee. Votes of thanks were passed to the secretaries, Miss H. Kiely and Mr S. A. O'Loughlin, and Mr E. R. O’Neiil (chairman), for their work on behalf of the Committee. TENNIS CLUB SOCIAL. A social and dance was held in the Orari Hall on Friday evening by the Orari Tennis Club, in an effort to raise funds for improvements to the courts. Competitions during the evening were won by Miss H. Kiely and Mr E. P. Chambers, and Mr W. Payne and Mr T. Story. Mr A. Henderson supplied the music for the dance, and Mr W. Leary officiated as M.C. SCHOOLS’ HOCKEY. Arrangements have been made for a hockey team from the Fairlie District High School to visit Winchester on Thursday afternoon, when a game will be played against the Winchester ladies. DANCE AT GAPES VALLEY. The Gapes Valley Hall Committee held a dance on Friday evening in aid of the Hall fund. An enjoyable evening was spetat by the large number present, many of whom were from Orari, Woodbury and Hilton. Extras were played by Misses Johnston, Bing - ham and Tindall. Mr J. Tindall was M.C. PERSONAL. Mr J. Lindsay, Orari, who has been transferred from the Temuka branch of the Bank of New Zealand to the Auckland branch, left on Thursday to take up his new duties. Mr W. D. Moss, the local postmaster, has been granted extended leave of absence for a fortnight, owing to sickness. Mr Ivan Bolitho returned on Saturday from a holiday spent in Otago. NOTES. The spinsters and bachelors of Rangitata held a meeting, and arranged to hold their annual ball in September. A Committee, with Mr M. McGuire as chairman, and Mr W. D. Palmer as secretary, has been appointed to make the necessary arrangements. HOCKEY PLAYER FAREWELLED. Members of the Winchester Ladies’ Hockey Club gathered at the residence of the president, Mrs J. C. South, on Thursday evening, to entertain Miss Eileen Cotter, who is leaving the district to reside in Christchurch. The evening was enjoyably spent in games, music and cards. Miss G. South sang and Mrs South gave a humorous recitation. Valedictory speeches were made by Mi’s W. R. Pearce and Mr W. E. Cook, while Mrs J. C. South presented Miss Cotter with a xylonite set. Miss Cotter suitably responded. Opportunity was taken to make a presentation of an afternoon-tea set to Mrs W. R. Pearce, whose services as secretary of the Club are highly appreciated. Mrs Pearce thanked the members for their thoughtful present.
