FOOTBALL.

TO-DAY’S REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. Providing the weather conditions remain fine, there should be a large attendance at Fraser Park this afternoon to witness the match between Southland and South Canterbury. The visitors had a strenuous practice yesterday morning, following which the team for this afternoon was selected. A very strong combination has been chosen, and the local representatives will need to produce their best form if they wish to record a win. For some years, Southland has been noted for the line type of forward it produces, and the wearers of the ; Maroon jersey this afternoon will be found to be well up so the standard of the men who have made the southern province a power to be reckoned with on the Rugby field. The selectors have also succeeded in getting together a back line of no mean strength and the players who will be seen in action this afternoon should treat the public to a bright exhibition. The strength of the South Canterbury representative team has improved considerably of recent seasons. Last year, on the southern tour, the team performed very creditably, and quite a number of the players who participated in the games against Otago and Southland will again be in action today. The team has had two opportunities of working up combination in the games played against North Otago and Mackenzie Sub-Union, so that there should be no excuse this afternoon on the score of unfamiliarity of each others’ play. The Oreen and Blacks will pack a solid scrum, and they should make the game one well worth watching. Two years ago, in Timaru, South Canterbury were successful, while Southland turned the tables in Invercargill last season. The game will be controlled by Mr G. F. Doyle. The teams are as follows: — SOUTH CANTERBURY. Connolly Trotter Gaffaney Forrester Strang Priestly Blyth Stewart (capt.) Pickering F. Stevenson A. Stevenson Giddings King Bassett Foley Reserves.—Backs: Brown, Mclntosh. Forwards: Adkins, Waple. SOUTHLAND. Morris Stubbs Crosbie Pickering Holden Townsend Kerse Johnson Agnew Tinnock McKenzie Galt (capt.) Purdue Metcalf Fitzgerald Reserves. —Backs: Anderson, Frampton. By Telegraph—Prasa Association. DUNEDIN, August 20. At a meeting of the Otago Rugbj Union a letter was received from tiw Canterbury Union suggesting an out* side referee for the Otago-Canterbury match at Christchurch. It was decided to reply that Otago was prepared to have a Canterbury referee.
