Tilden (U.S.A.) beat Jean Borotra (France), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5. Henri Cochet (France) beat G. M. Lott (U.S.A.), 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. The Play. Even though everyone realised that Cochet would again clinch the Davis Cup, the atmosphere was tense to-day and became more so when the dashing and resourceful Tilden conquered a tired Borotra. After the first set Tilden’s strategy was superior. His mighty slams spoiled Borotra s acrobatic volleying, and the American made him run from side to side in pursuit of lightning drives that gradually wore down the Frenchman. Cochet’s win against Lott was child’s play. The champion had a sluggish spell In the second set. Yet, cool as Lott kept, excellent as his drives and services were, and his sureness on the back-hand, Cochet played him like an angler. Cochet took eight successive games. He returned seemingly unplayable shots, and lobbed with great accuracy, while his cross-court drives were disconcerting.
