ESCAPED PRISONER RE ARRESTED. By Telegraph— Pres r AaaocUtion. . AUCKLAND, March 1. John William Osborne, 17, who escaped from the police station lock-up a fortnight ago, was arrested at 2 o clock this morning asleep in a large cupboard at the residence of George Bloomfield, Epsom, about which detectives had been informed a suspicious character had been seen. A half-eaten apple, and an open book, and a bed made of eiderdowns indicated that Osborne had made himself comfortable. Osborne had gained entry, by climbing through a window. Osborne submitted to arrest without a struggle. He appeared in Court later, on a charge of breaking and entering,. and the theft of jewellery and money to the value of £75. He was remanded till Alarch 7 Further charges are said to be pending.

FIREAIAN CHARGED.

AUCKLAND, Alarch 1. A member of the Wellington Fire Brigade, James William Steward, 25, who arrived witli his wife to spend a holiday in Auckland, was charged at the Police Court with the theft of a gold and diamond ring and camera, of a total value of £lO, the property of some person unknown, the police alleging that the property had been stolen by accused from fires he attended. The accused was remanded on bail to Wellington.

By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON. March 1. Accepting the police evidence, Air F. K. Hunt, S.M., to-day convicted Charles Henry Lockhart Tucker, confectioner at Kilbirnie, on a charge of selling liquor without a license. Following a sale to the police, a raid was made on the defendant’s place, and a considerable quantity of liquor was seized. Air Hunt had no hesitation in accepting the police story, and fined him £25, in default three months. To the judgment All* Hunt added: “And in my opinion, he has told lies and committed perjury.”
